A Great Way to Celebrate Three Years

Foreign Encounters Cover

My blog is three years old today. It has survived the terrible twos and is now learning joined-up writing. And it has readers as far apart as Nova Scotia and Qatar. It will not have escaped your notice that today is also Valentine’s Day. So why don’t I cash in by announcing the publication in ebook format today of Foreign Encounters, Writers Abroad’s latest anthology?

Online ex-pat writing group Writers Abroad has published three collections of ex-pat writing since 2010. The theme varies but it is always based on foreign experiences and culture. We published Foreign Encounters in hard copy format last October.

“An encounter can be a chance meeting, a planned get-together or even a confrontation. This collection of stories, non-fiction and poems features a variety of foreign encounters: with family, friends, lovers, animals, cultures, or just with one’s own prejudices and preconceptions.”

My own contributions are:

  • ‘Bertie’s Buttons’ – a short story about a strange encounter set in World War I  (page 18).
  • ‘Monsieur C’ – a non-fiction piece about a local personality (page 149).

All proceeds from the sale of the book go to Books Abroad, a charity that co-ordinates the donation of free books for schools all over the world. In its 30 years’ existence it has supplied more than 1,600 schools with books.

Great value ebook

The hard copy version of Foreign Encounters has already made a nice wodge for the charity. Building on its success, we are publishing an ebook version today for those of you who have e-readers. It is priced at $2.99, which is amazingly good value for a 300-page book, crammed full of high quality content.

The ebook is available from the following:

Amazon – this link is for the co.uk store so you might have to change co.uk in the URL to .com or whichever store your Kindle is registered with.  You need to retain the number at the end, which is the book’s assigned number. And the price will be in your local currency, based on the $2.99 list price.

Smashwords – where you can purchase it in a variety of electronic formats.

And don’t forget it’s still available in hard copy format from lulu.com at $9.99.

Please rate the book or write a review on any of the above sites if you feel moved to do so. We hope to make lots more money for our chosen charity.

More to come…

We are working on the theme for this year’s anthology and will soon issue a call for submissions. So if you are an ex-pat who might be interested in submitting a piece, watch this space for details.

It only remains for me to thank everyone who has read my blog over the past three years – and who I hope will continue to do so. I love reading your interesting and entertaining comments. They make me feel I’m not just talking to myself.

My husband and I moved to an 18th-century farmhouse in SW France in 1997. I am fascinated by French history, rural traditions and customs and enjoy seeking out the reality behind the myths. I run my own copywriting business and write short stories and the occasional novel in my spare time. My husband appears here as the SF, which stands for Statistics Freak, owing to his penchant for recording numbers about everything.

While talking to one’s self isn’t all bad, I agree it’s much nicer to have others chime in on the conversation! Congratulations on three years of blogging!

Agreed. In fact, I have some quite good conversations with myself, especially when I’m trying to reach a decision. Then it can get quite heated! But when it comes to blogging, you want to feel others are joining in. Thanks to you and other readers, I get that nice buzz.
