  1. Bonjour Vanessa,
My husband and I spent a wonderful day hiking the trail from Bar that you recommended in one of your blogs. We also collected chestnuts that littered the path and enjoyed the beautiful purple flowers that produce the saffron we love to cook with. We are planning another hike to Villeneuve d’Aveyron, but would like to find a map to guide us. We have searched several web sites, but are unsure of which randonée to take. Do you have suggestions for us?

Your blogs are our favorite and have given us much pleasure.

    • Hello Angie,

Thank you for commenting and for your kind words about the blog. The trail from Bar is a lovely one, especially in the autumn. I’m pleased you enjoyed it. We haven’t done it yet this year, but it’s certainly one of my favourites. I agree that the websites aren’t terribly helpful when it comes to detailed directions. I did find one that listed a lot of walks in Aveyron – plus directions – but now, of course, I can’t find it again. I should have made a note of it when I had the chance.

The one near Villeneuve that we did about 3 weeks ago and about which I wrote on the blog was in a book we bought several years ago entitled ‘Les Belles Balades de l’Aveyron en Pays Villefranchois’. I can’t remember where we bought it, but they might have it in the Villefranche-de-Rouergue Office de Tourisme – you could always ask there and they might have guides available for other circuits. Or I have found it available on this website: https://www.randonnee-aveyron.fr/topo-guide/en-pays-villefranchois/. In fact, that walk was the only one that was really around Villeneuve.

It might also be worth investing in an IGN map of that area, if you don’t have one already. These are the most detailed Ordnance Survey-type maps. The one that covers Villefranche-de-Rouergue would also cover the area around Villeneuve. I’m sure the tourist office would sell those – or any bookshop or newsagent.

Good luck, anyway. If you find more precise information than I’ve been able to give, do let me know!

Do you live in the region or are you just visiting?

      Amitiés,

      Vanessa

  2. Bonjour Vanessa, we discovered the Aveyron region by accident 12 years ago and have been spending 2 weeks every summer in a Gite near Villefranche de Rouerge ever since! I have been following your blog for the past 4 years and have found it very interesting and informative( we had a wonderful lunch in Bach this year) . Having someone write about a specific area in such detail is really good. This year we left just before that heavy rain but had to cope with driving to Cherbourg in temperatures of 35C and no A/C working on our journey home to Ireland – something to be said for Irish weather after all. We love the Aveyon region and thanks to your excellent blog we are finding more and things to do and learning about all those little things the guide books leave out.
    Many thanks Vanessa

    • Thank you for your lovely comments, Margot – and for following the blog for so long! Once people discover Aveyron, they are usually enchanted, but it’s an area that is little known outside France. It takes someone who lives in a place to tell you the things you can’t find in the guide books. We live in Tarn-et-Garonne, only a few kms from the border with Aveyron, but I have a great attachment to the latter. I’m so sorry to hear about your nightmare journey with no air cond. I don’t know what we did before cars were equipped with it – just stoically put up with it, I suppose. Thank you again for your kind words and I will try to pick out some more local attractions before your next visit.
